One of my favorite authors Thich Nhat Hanh wrote (I paraphrase here) that understanding and compassion open the door to communication.
I want to open the door.
My overriding desire in writing this blog – and making it available to others to opine – is to increase our understanding of one another, of our community, of the many things we have in common and of the many ways that together we can make this a better place to live.
Hispanic Unity serves 20,000 people annually from 28 different countries – we work with our clients in English, Spanish, Haitian-Creole a little Portuguese and during our annual free tax preparation season we also work with two partners to prepare taxes using American sign language.
Our Vision is to empower everyone to live their American dream.
And, we work on both sides of the bridge. On one side we prepare our clients – help them make sense of their new land. Help translate for them — literally and figuratively — the new culture they are living in. The end goal is to give them the confidence and hope that they can succeed.
And on the other side of the bridge, we translate the challenges and needs and dreams of our new Americans to our larger community. Our work in the larger community is to increase understanding, empathy and to open up doors of opportunity for our new community members.
This blog will focus on our Mission to help people become self sufficient, civically engaged and to help them lead productive lives. We will share information – and yes opinions too – on ways we can collectively help our new Americans – and all Americans – to become successful by removing obstacles on either side of the bridge.
We also will share with you information, statistics and research related to the work we do and the clients we serve.
You will hear from me as well as from other voices that are part of the HUF Family: the individuals and families we work with, our team, our volunteers, our partners and our investors.
We want to hear from you. We want to do more good together.
