Jimmy Buffett, my favorite troubadour, asks in one of his songs, “are you kind?”
If you are kind, you care about others. If you care about others you may want to make their lives better. If their lives are better, the whole community is lifted.
We are so proud to have three caring young – very young – people who are living “kindness” and community service.
Meet Kelly, Zoey and Joey. Each one of these young leaders visits HUF regularly – either every week or several times per month – to read to our 3-5 year old preschoolers.
Both Kelly and Zoey are alumns from our 5-Star Unity 4Kids Preschool. They are each excelling at school. And both have begun their community service early!
Kelly is the sister of one of our most beloved volunteers, Victoria. [Victoria is currently a student at the University of Miami. And, at the ripe age of 14 – began work on a manual we still use today to teach our Citizenship Instructors. She is a Miami Herald Silver Knights Awardee.]
Kelly started in May 2007 in the Family Literacy Academy at the age of 3. Kelly didn’t speak English and little by little started learning through classroom activities and interaction with her classmates and teachers. During all her schooling, Kelly has demonstrated strong academic skills. Kelly is 10 years old and is in 5th grade. She is an Honor Roll student and is always placed in advance classes. She won a Gold Medal of Coral Spring Swimming Club. Kelly’s mother is very grateful for the great foundation that her daughter received during her early years of education at Hispanic Unity.
Zoey graduated from Unity 4Kids in June 2011. Zoey is 8 years old who arrived to our program in August 2009 with a big smile on her face. After participating in our program, Zoey’s academic skills improved significantly. Zoey loved to play in the housekeeping area. She loved playacting she was a mother or a teacher. Prior to graduating from Unity 4Kids, Zoey learned how to read short sentences. She would select a new book every day from the school’s lending library . Zoey also learned how to write not only her name, but also simple sentences as well. Today she is in 3rd grade with a 4th grade reading level. She is an Honor Roll student. Her parents are very proud of Zoey and like Kelly’s parents, believe Unity 4Kids provided a great foundation during her formative years. Today Zoey is one of U4Kid’s wonderful volunteers who reads to our preschool children every month.
And we also have Joey. She is the daughter of one of our most dedicated volunteers – Cheryl Goldstein. You can read all about Cheryl’s work with HUF here.
So, it isn’t surprising that Joey has been reading monthly with our youngest HUF clients. Joey is a fourth grader at the University School where she serves on the board of the student government. In her free time, she competes on the swim team and plays the drums. Joey is dedicated to making a difference in our community. Every year for her birthday she makes a donation to a charity of her choice in lieu of receiving birthday gifts from her family. She hopes to instill a love of learning in all the Unity 4Kids students, and she can’t wait to see their smiling faces each month.
