Hispanic Unity of Florida Issues Statement on the Repeal of Title 42
Hispanic Unity of Florida (HUF) applauds the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announcement to terminate Title 42, effective May 23, 2022. We welcome and agree this is a long-overdue policy shift that will help return the United States to its founding principles as a nation that protects the most vulnerable. Ending Title 42 is a crucial step towards rebuilding an equitable and welcoming asylum system.
For 40 years, HUF has served as the Ellis Island of South Florida and while the debate over Title 42 may seem far away, occurring in the border states and the halls of Congress, the repeal of this rule will have a positive effect on the immigrant families of our community waiting for loved ones. Throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, many people are looking to live their American Dream and we must remember it is 100% legal to seek asylum under U.S. law. It is also a human right.
HUF will continue with its Mission of Empowering immigrants and others to become self-sufficient, productive, and civically engaged. We stand ready to serve those that will need our assistance in this pivotal moment. HUF and other community serving organizations across South Florida will continue the task of providing access to resources, legal aid, and Temporary Protection Status (TPS) for those that apply and meet requirements.
